Pattern 4479 Tudor Rose shape 148 vase

Pattern 4479 is a rare variation of the Tudor Rose pattern 4491. It is very similar to pattern 4491. The obvious difference is that the green enamel is not used. The dashes in the borders and the flower centres are orange and bronze lustre.

The identification of examples is hindered because the tube-lining for 4479 and 4491 is identical for most examples including the shape 148 pot above. The casual observer might assume it is an example of the commonly found pattern 4491 or noticing the lack of green that it is a variation of 4491. The decorators did not help matters by labelling most observed examples with the incorrect pattern number of 4491. At the time of writing, (April 2022) only one example out of the ten recorded 4479 items had been correctly labelled by the lustrer. That was a shape 207 vase and most closely matched the patten book sketch because it did not have the upper frieze border and instead had a strong solid dark brown lustre border from the top rim to the floral and leaf design.

Pattern 4479 Tudor Rose 12" charger

Another variation to the design is on the only charger seen, and that had a border of alternating orange and bronze lustre large dots, much like the earlier Tudor Rose designs on snow glaze (4300 and 4318). Note the charger does not have the outer tube-lined frieze border as would be seen on regular pattern 4491 chargers.

All examples of 4479 have the AGR2 backstamp style. Production was probably very limited and only made for a short time. Since 8 of the 10 examples have the traditional tube-lining layout as for 4491 rather than the pattern book description for 4479 it is quite possible that the tubeliners soon began to decorate them the same way. Once the version with green enamel was found to be the more desirable of the two styles production of 4479 might have ended quite quickly.

In summary, below is a comparison of the true design of 4479 alongside 4491 on the same shape 207 vase. The key differences are the lack of green enamel in the flower centres and border friezes. The tubeline floral and leaf design is modified to extend to the vase rim, (or charger edge) and the upper or outer frieze removed. However, most pots seen without green enamel have the same tubelined pattern as 4491 as shown in the shape 148 vase above.
